Journaling is more than just a habit—it’s a spiritual discipline that strengthens your faith while calming your mind. By combining the benefits of journaling with the truth of God’s Word, you can transform your spiritual walk and nurture your emotional well-being.
A Journey Through Journaling
My life with journaling has been a decade-long journey with the Lord. Ten years ago, I began journaling to address unresolved emotional pain that I didn’t know how to control. I was emotionally reactive, triggered by external circumstances, and lacked balance and emotional regulation. My responses to life felt imbalanced, leaving me disconnected and overwhelmed.
As I searched for clarity, I was drawn to the sanctuary of the Old Testament. The sanctuary represents God’s plan of salvation and His way of redeeming the earth from sin. It also symbolizes His plan for redeeming our hearts. The sanctuary became my roadmap for reconnecting with God and hearing His voice.
Through journaling, I began asking God questions about my negative thoughts: Why do I feel this way? Why do I respond this way? Why does this pattern exist in my life? As I poured out these questions, the Lord began to reveal the roots of my pain—patterns of negative thinking and lies woven into my mind through trauma and disconnection during my formative years.
Over the past decade, the Lord has peeled back layers of emotional pain, exposing the core beliefs and lies that shaped my view of myself, others, and even God. Journaling became the tool through which God unraveled this web of negativity, revealing His truth and leading me to emotional and spiritual freedom.
My hope is to help you start your own journey of healing through journaling—a journey of asking God “why” and allowing Him to replace lies with truth.
How Journaling Transforms Your Brain
Journaling has profound effects on the brain, offering benefits backed by science and deeply aligned with scripture.
-
Reduces Stress and Anxiety
Writing down your thoughts and emotions helps you release burdens and process challenges. Scripture echoes this need for release:
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7
Journaling creates a space to lay your concerns before God, just as David did in the Psalms:
“When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” – Psalm 61:2 -
Improves Memory and Comprehension
Writing engages the brain more deeply, helping you retain and understand scripture. This reflects the wisdom of Proverbs:
“Let your heart retain my words; keep my commands, and live.” – Proverbs 4:4 -
Encourages Emotional Regulation
Journaling helps you reflect and regulate your emotions. As you align your thoughts with God’s Word, you experience His peace:
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in You.” – Isaiah 26:3 -
Promotes Clarity and Creativity
Writing out your prayers and reflections can help you find solutions and gain perspective. Paul encourages us to renew our minds:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Romans 12:2
