How Long Should I Cleave to the Past?

Feb 10, 2017

Our stories have immense power—they shape our perceptions, influence our decisions, and guide the course of our lives. But what happens when we hold onto our stories so tightly that they begin to cause us pain in the present?

Take a moment to reflect: Where does your past take you? Does it bring feelings of regret, fear, or heartbreak? Does it produce negative emotions that weigh you down? If you answered yes, you may be cleaving to your past.

While it’s healthy to reflect on the past and acknowledge how far God has brought us, there’s a fine line between using our stories for His glory and letting them dictate our present.

The Dual Nature of the Past

Our past can be both a powerful testimony and a heavy burden. When used rightly, it can:

  • Show God’s faithfulness and redemption.
  • Inspire and encourage others to draw closer to Christ.
  • Serve as a tool to bring transformation and healing to others.

However, issues arise when we misuse or over-identify with our past:

  1. We Use the Past to Justify the Present
Sometimes, we cling to past pain to excuse our current behavior. This hinders growth and keeps us stuck in unhealthy patterns.

  2. We Seek Emotional Validation Through Our Story
When we continually evoke the past to gain attention or affirmation from others, it becomes a way to seek validation instead of turning to God for healing.

  3. We Romanticize the Past
Living in the "good ole days" can prevent us from seeing the beauty and opportunities of the present.

  4. We Allow Guilt and Heartbreak to Control Us
Unresolved pain from the past can lead to unhealthy choices, leaving us haunted by guilt, shame, and regret.

While some stories are undeniably painful and devastating, they don’t have to define who we are today.

You Are Not Your Story

Your story is a part of your journey, but it is not your identity. It’s only a fraction of who you are. Philippians 3:13-14 reminds us:

“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

We can have a story without being consumed by it. Through Christ, you are free to release the past and step into the future He has prepared for you.

How to Use Your Past for God’s Purpose

Here are steps to release the grip of your past and align it with God’s purpose:

  1. Allow Christ to Recreate You
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
Let God transform your heart and mind, making you a new creation in Him.

  2. Stop Believing the Lie That You Are Your Past
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!” – Isaiah 43:18-19
God is writing a new story for you. Trust Him to guide you forward.

  3. Believe Who God Says You Are
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” – Galatians 5:1
You are not defined by past mistakes. You are defined by God’s truth and the freedom He provides.

The Takeaway

Jesus has a plan that is bigger than your past.

  1. He Offers Forgiveness: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:9
  2. He Redeems the Past: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28
  3. He Desires Your Surrender: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Romans 12:1-2

Check Your Motives

Take some time to reflect on why you may still be holding onto your story:

  • Why am I hanging on to my story?
  • Is holding onto my story bringing me closer to Jesus?
  • Can I allow Christ to heal my mind and create a new story for me?

Your story is powerful, but it’s not meant to keep you in bondage. God’s plan is for you to use it as a testimony of His grace, not as a crutch or a cage.

Moving Forward in Freedom

Releasing your past doesn’t mean forgetting it; it means surrendering it to Christ. Allow Him to heal your heart, rewrite your story, and use your testimony to glorify Him.

You are not your past. You are a child of God, loved, redeemed, and created for a beautiful future. Let go of the old and embrace the new thing He is doing in your life.

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” – Isaiah 43:19

Are you ready to let go of your past and embrace the freedom Christ offers? Start today—He’s waiting to walk with you into your new story.

Until next time...
